AHILIDO: the platform that certifies the existence of Beninese companies

Check in a few clicks that a company has indeed been registered in Benin: that is the promise of AHILIDO, the Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry service built into the national business services platform.

AHILIDO, la plateforme de vérification des entreprises béninoises
AHILIDO lets you check online the legal existence of a company registered in Benin.

How can you make sure, before signing a contract or entering a partnership, that a Beninese company really and legally exists? CCI Bénin offers a simple answer with AHILIDO, a service giving access to the country’s company database, built into the national platform of the same name. Anyone online can use it to check, through an online search, that a company has been registered in Benin.

The question seems basic; it is not. In many transactions, trust still rests on a recommendation, a business card or a convincing phone call. Yet an impressive company name, a polished logo and a website prove nothing: the only proof that counts is entry in the register. AHILIDO moves this check from the realm of personal trust to that of searchable public data.

Le service est opéré par la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie du Bénin.
The service is operated by the Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

A trust tool for business partners

This service is aimed in particular at investors, international partners and members of the diaspora who want to check the legitimacy of a counterpart before making a financial commitment — an essential step of vigilance at a time when investment opportunities, including on Akèda’s “Invest in Benin” page, are multiplying.

The service rests on a precise legal framework: it is covered by a declaration receipt issued by the Personal Data Protection Authority (APDP), and falls within the statutes of CCI Bénin approved by decree in September 2019. In other words, the publication of this data is governed by Beninese data protection law: it is neither a private directory nor a database built by uncontrolled aggregation.

What the check proves — and what it does not

You need to be precise about the tool’s scope, or it gives a false sense of security. AHILIDO confirms that a company has been registered in Benin and appears in the national database. That is an essential foundation, but it is not an audit: the service says nothing about the company’s financial health, its ability to honour a contract, any ongoing disputes or the real identity of the person contacting you on its behalf.

The online check is therefore the first step of due diligence, not its conclusion. For a significant commitment, it is usefully supplemented by asking for the registration receipt and a valid tax certificate, reviewing the financial statements for the last two years, and — when the amounts justify it — visiting the operating site.

Akèda’s advice

Before any investment or commercial partnership in Benin, checking a company’s legal existence through AHILIDO should become a reflex — just like consulting a trade register in any other country. It takes two minutes; the savings it sometimes brings run into millions.

One building block among others in digitising the business environment

AHILIDO is best understood in context. In a few years Benin has digitised business creation (MonEntreprise.bj), a large share of public services for businesses (service-public.bj), digital support for small businesses (CCI Bénin’s E-Tchité programme) and now existence checks. Each of these building blocks has a limited impact on its own; together they significantly reduce the cost of information for anyone wanting to do business in Benin.

It is precisely this cost of information that most often discourages the distant investor. A diaspora entrepreneur who, from Brussels or Montreal, can set up a company online, check a partner online and keep track of obligations online makes an investment decision under conditions comparable to those found elsewhere. It is a quiet transformation, but perhaps the most structuring one.

Key takeaways

AHILIDO answers a simple question — does this company legally exist? — and answers it free of charge, online, in a few seconds. Make it the systematic first step of any new business relationship in Benin, then follow up with supporting documents and, if the stakes justify it, a site visit.
